Dirck Volckertszen (the Noorman) was a ship’s carpenter, farmer, and immigrant to New York. He arrived from Scandinavia around 1630 and began farming in the vicinity of present day Wall Street. Later, Dirck was among the first European settlers on Long Island, his farm there including most of today’s neigborhoods of Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
